Multiverse ( 2nd Part)
On a comment made by HeyesPhoto on my previous “Multivese” post he asked what kind of oil I used to get those patterns. I didn’t think a lot about that question then because I didn’t really thought that the actual oil used would make a difference . But then it made me curious…I kept thinking about it…Would a different oil give a different result…? If one has a higher density than the other will I be able to see the difference in the images? So I set on checking out their densities and found out that olive oil has a smaller density than the sunflower one (olive oil – aprox 800 kg/m3 and sunflower aprox 920 kg/m3). Finding these results made me give it one more try at this series of photos as I was now convinced that I might just get visibly different results.
After finishing the shoot and taking a long and inquisitive look and the resulting photographs…I am not that convinced anymore that the oil used visibly changed the photos. I used different colors this time and slightly higher shutter speed…also it is impossible to get the same pattern…but these are the only changes I see. Do you see any change in the images that can be attributed to the oil used ?

I found that olive oil and sunflower oil behaved a little differently. In this series of pictures:

It was a mixture of water, olive oil and myself blowing bubbles through a straw. I really liked the effect it gave! Plus, you’re left with lots of micro-bubbles that seem to be trapped underneath the oil on the surface. If you stir the mixture slightly it almost looks like a rotating galaxy.
Bryan Peterson in his close-up photography book recommends using massage oil to simulate water droplets – the more viscous oil tends to be better behaved and won’t evaporate so quickly when you want to photograph it.
Motor oil is something I want to try next!

Super tari fotografiile din ultimele serii (Evolution si Multiverse)!!!! Love’em!!!
Mi se pare foarte tare atat ideea cat si rezultatul ei. Bravo! Sincera sa fiu, nu mi-ar displacea asa niste tablouri :p

Now to let me answer to my own question….It does make a difference and just now I saw it. This sunflower oil that I used for these shots, being denser, forms a thicker layer flowing on the water and it does reflect the light more and better, giving the image a more accentuated 3d effect. If you take a look at the bubbles you can see what I am talking about. Now if that makes the images better…I am not that sure, but I am happy I found the visible change that can be attributed to the actual oil used . Now I am talking about the cooking oil I used, because I am sure if I used hydraulic or engine oil , the results will be completely different. Maybe I will do that next time…yep…next to follow is hydraulic and engine oil
